Michael Schmalz is the president of Digital Extremes Ltd., a London, Ontario based company software developer for Xbox, Playstation and PC. Now, in its 25th year, Digital Extremes is a pioneer in the videogame industry having worked on some of sector's most popular first person action franchises including BioShock, Halo and Unreal. DE's most recent game, Warframe is a digitally distributed, original I.P. has attracted more than 40 million users since its launch in 2013 and has become one of the most successful Free-to-Play PC-Console action adventure games in the industry.
Michael has been responsible for various business development activities including working with government and other game industry leaders to develop programs to help promote the video game industry and helping the company manage its growth and internal transformation to a “next-gen” company. Through 2010 to 2018, Digital Extremes was made Canada's top 100 employers list as well as being cited as one of the top 10 companies to work for in Canada by the National Post and one of Canada’s top employers for young people by Maclean’s Magazine. In 2016, Michael and his brother, James Schmalz were honored as Ernst & Young Ontario Entrepreneurs of the Year in Entertainment and Media.
Michael has a Ph.D. in media studies and a Masters degree in engineering science from the University of Western Ontario to compliment an MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University. He is a Certified Professional Accountant, a Chartered Director and a Licensed Professional Engineer. He is also a member of the International Game Developers Association and a Director for the London Economic Development Corporation and the Canada Media Fund. He is also a co-founder of the Achimota Centre for Children with Autism, a charitable organization that provides specialized treatment for autistic children.
