Alec Saunders is a Business, Technology & Product leader with 20+ years of achievement delivering innovative solutions to the software development community. His background includes progressive developer relations, evangelist and product leadership roles at software companies including Microsoft and BlackBerry where he led product and growth strategies that shattered performance goals. At Microsoft, Alec was instrumental in the launch of every major operating system through the 90’s, including managing the launch of the first versions of Internet Explorer. He also grew the Canadian share of Developer Tools from 29% to 75% and managed the most successful launch of the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade globally.
Alec then co-founded to Iotum, an award-winning telecom startup where he secured $3.5 million in funding, achieved 25% per quarter revenue growth, and co-authored 13 patent applications with 3 granted to date. At this early stage venture, Alec was responsible for all aspects of strategy including product vision, product roadmap, product positioning, commercialization and customer enablement.
Joining BlackBerry in 2011 as their Vice President of Developer Relations & Ecosystem Development 2011 to 2014, Alec led a 200-member team to revitalize developer relations from a -43 NPS to a strongly positive +46, growing applications submitted to BlackBerry World 1650% and the developer base by 921%. He also delivered the largest-ever applications ecosystem for the launch of a generation 1 product, with 105,000 applications submitted, marking 150% of goal. Alec then assumed leadership of BlackBerry’s Cloud business unit developing the BlackBerry Project Ion platform.
